Australia is a very safe and friendly country. However, it doesnt matter where you go in the world there are things of both a criminal and environmental nature that can threaten your safety if you are not aware and do not employ some basic precautions.

PERSONAL SAFETY

When you are travelling around this magnificent country of ours, have a friend or relative at home who you keep in touch with at all times. Keep them informed of your travel plans and when you are leaving one place and travelling to your next spot. This is vital if you are travelling in remote or outback regions. Your contact person should have the responsibility of notifying authorities if you fail to make contact at a pre-arranged time. Discuss this thoroughly with them before leaving home. Make sure you both agree on a margin of time to allow for mechanical breakdowns, poor weather or some other unforeseen problems though. After all you do not want to be the cause of a false alarm.

Avoid danger by keeping your vehicle and caravan locked when you are not around, even if you plan to be absent for only a few minutes at a service station, public toilet, shop or lookout: petty criminals are attracted to such places. You may even be at your campsite and just going to the local shop for an ice-cream or something. Do not leave expensive items on display. Keep your lap-top computer, cameras, handbag etc out of visual range. If you have valuables, such as cash, cheques, papers and jewellery, you may consider buying one of the small, fibre-style car safes available. Take care when withdrawing money at ATMs and only withdraw small amounts of cash.

Be cautious while you are driving on the road. To avoid danger do not pick up hitchhikers in some state it is actually illegal. If someone flags you down on the road, keep your doors locked and talk to them through a partially opened window until you can find out what the problem is. Report any suspicious behaviour to the local police.

Some of these may sound a bit harsh, but it is your safety you are trying to protect and avoid danger.

Then of course there are the normal personal safety issues.

• Avoid the danger of sunburn. Australia is a beautiful country but the sun can very quickly give you sunburn and sunstroke. Apply sunscreen regularly (SPF30+).
• Lives are lost every year from rock fishing. Be aware of waves and slippery rocks ALL THE TIME.
• We have over 10,000 beaches in Australia but most of them are not patrolled, beware of rips and tides. At patrolled beaches only swim between the flags.
• Make sure your boat is suitable for the conditions you are using it for. Be careful of bars and rips at entrances between estuaries and the ocean, they are hazardous for boats.
• When you go bushwalking know your own capabilities.

I could go on and on, but the main thing is THINK SAFETY at all times and avoid danger.

CREATURE HAZARDS

Australia has a diverse range of creatures. Some of them are unique and appeal worldwide (kangaroo, emu) but some species are extremely dangerous and direct contact with them should be avoided. There are some fairly simple precautions that you can take to avoid danger.

BOX JELLYFISH (STINGERS)

Found in Australias northern tropical waters from October to May, these creatures have a sting that can be fatal to humans. Avoid swimming on beaches north of Rockhampton and Exmouth during the stinger season (varies but normally from November to June). Outside of the season, check with locals first before entering the water.

STONEFISH

These fish are another resident of Australias northern waters with a very poisonous sting. Wear sandshoes in the water and do not overturn rocks and coral.

BLUE-RINGED OCTOPUS

Common in rock pools all around Australia, these small creatures about the size of a golf ball have a sting that can cause paralysis followed by death. Wear shoes to explore rocky areas and avoid danger by not handling the marine life you come across.

SHARKS

The best way to avoid sharks is to swim at patrolled beaches. Otherwise, avoid areas of low visibility, do not swim at night and check with locals about whether or not they consider an area safe. If you are surfing, surf with someone else.

CROCODILES

Two varieties are found in northern Australia. Saltwater crocs are extremely dangerous and are found on the coast and in rivers up to 300km inland. Freshwater crocodiles are less dangerous and tend to avoid humans, but are aggressive during mating and protecting their young. Both varieties lurk beneath the surface of the water. They are hard to see and, if you are not an expert, hard to tell apart. Heed local warning signs. Do not swim or paddle in crocodile areas. Do not feed or clean fish by the waters edge.

SPIDERS AND SNAKES

Leave them alone and they will generally not bother you. Avoid contact by wearing sturdy boots when walking. Check your shoes before putting them on and check your bed before crawling into it and check any other likely spots for stowaways.

WATER SAFETY

Most of Australias coastline is un-patrolled and dangerous, not just because of harmful creatures but also because of powerful rips and currents. The only safe way to swim in coastal waters is between the flags at patrolled beaches. Know your swimming ability and watch out for warning signs and beach closures.

Having said all of that about how to avoid danger, Australia is a magnificent place to visit and by taking a little bit of care and thinking safety you will generally be fairly safe and have a great holiday.

It sounds like something fruity to me, claims another. We cant be perceived as a fruity company!

And what about worms that get into the apples, a third member agrees. And the way they rot, and how the juice gets sticky, and how

All right! the suggestee apologizes, curling up in a near fetal position, vowing shell never venture another idea.

And so the group comes to absolute agreement that the name must convey what the company does. So the next set of suggestions seem right on target

The closer the committee comes to describing the what of the company, the more they become homogenized and blend right into the rest of their industry. They sound more like a business description than a brand name, and in doing so they obscure the very identity they are trying to create. They dont realize that the new company name will exist in a setting that helps define it, so that the name is free to evoke feeling and emotion. An apple is fresh, approachable, healthy, and invigorating. And so a company can borrow on the attributes inherent in a completely unrelated item to convey the way they approach its business.

So if creative company names are so much more memorable and effective than descriptive names, why is it that so many businesses make this basic mistake? In large part its because we conditioned from childhood to conform, to be like others, and to follow the leader. As much as we dont like to admit it, most of us would rather follow an established trail than to blaze a new one. One of the first questions I ask potential clients is whether they want their new company name to blend in, or to stand out. Most adamantly say they want to stand out, but when stand out names are presented, the red flag goes up.

Im not sure, they might say. These names are unique, but theyre so different from anything in our industry.

And so it goes. The names continue to blend in until someone names an airline Virgin instead of Southwest. Or an online job site Monster instead of CareerBuilder. Or a massive online store Amazon instead of Books-a-Million.

Not only are descriptive names less impactful, they are more difficult to visualize. I can picture a Monster, but I have trouble picturing a Career Builder. When it comes to beach shoes, I can imagine a pair of Crocs, but not a pair of Keens. These vivid mental pictures provide yet another way to anchor the brand name in the customer's mind for easier recall.

Creatives names are also less restrictive. If you have a purely descriptive name, what happens if your company's core products or services being to change? How much additional advertising does it require for Burlington Coat Factory to convince customers they sell more than just coats?

Are highly memorable names the only way to go? No. Some small businesses dont have the luxury of a marketing budget and resort to literal names out of short term necessity. And there are other viable naming strategies that work well. But for those looking to build a brand name that will set them apart, and reserve more space in the customers mind, then an evocative, memorable name is the way to go. Seth Godin makes a convincing case for memorable company names in his New York Times bestseller, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business By Being Remarkable.

So whether you name company after a river, a fruit, a dessert, a reptile, or even an odd color bovine, chances are you will, on a minimum, make a name for yourself. And once potential customers notice and remember your company, the rest is up to you. If you do your job well, youll have a company thats not only memorable, but one thats unforgettable.

It never fails, something new comes along. Its a widget, a new shape, a new color, or a slightly different take on an old theme. For some reason the new item sells. All of a sudden it sells faster and faster as momentum builds and more people hear the buzz, become aware of it, like it, buy it, show it to their friends and associates and then, for no apparent reason something else captures the imagination of the marketplace.

This is not a new phenomenon. Fortunes were made and lost during Hollands Tulip Mania back in the 1630s and continues through today. Think about it. Those who are late to be aware of a trend often find themselves owning excess inventory that ends up on sidewalk sale bins (and sometimes even dumped in the trash) to get rid of.

Managing the risk inherent in trends and fads is crucial. It takes skill, experience, and luck to be successful at it. Forecasting sales, planning the advertising, charting purchases on order, and managing inventory levels can be a daily task with fast-spiking items. Customer Review: I am getting used to them...
I won't give a 5-star review to a rubber shoe that doesn't fit very well. I like these shoes but they have weaknesses. These shoes are just okay. They are cushy on the bottom. I wear a 10.5 D shoe, which means I have a wider foot than average. The heel cup on this shoe is wide and the heel has a tendency to move from side-to-side within it - and there is a tendency because of this to twist the ankle slightly on uneven ground. On even ground the shoe is mostly fine. Your feet will sweat and your socks will get wet because the rubber does not breathe. It is also waterproof. At first the padding around the top did not conform and irritated my achiles tendon area and the sides of my ankles. I seem to be getting over it. The fit and finish of the leather uppers is a little sloppy with a few thread-ends sticking out and frizzing. It's minor but also the sign of a cheaply mass-produced product. Because of the instability of the heel I am a little concerned about walking long distances or doing anything other than light hiking in these. If you do not pronate or suppinate at all you might have no issue with your heel swimming. The tread flexes nicely with the foot and the shoe is comfortable in a front-to-back walk but not fun if walking on uneven terrain - even though the sole is plenty thick and cushy so rocks won't poke your foot.

I own 3 pair of sandals and live in them during warm weather. I would love to buy this shoe but it does not come in Mens size 10. Very disappointing.

The Spanish designer Cristbal Balenciaga was referred to as "the master of us all" said famed designer Christian Dior. Cristbal in 1914 opened his first boutique is Spain and eventually Barcelona and Madrid. The royal family of Spain and the aristocrats were famed for wearing his designs, but he was forced to move to Paris when the Spanish Civil War broke out and he was forced to close stores.

In 1937 Cristbal opened his couture house in Paris, his very first runway show was heavily influened by the Spanish Renaissance. Balenciaga was a huge success is Paris and within a couple of years the press there called him a revolutionary. His designs became very desirable and the editor of Harper's Bazzar was a huge fan at the time.

During WWII a lot of people who wanted to see his famed designs, traveled to europe. He was at this time praised for his "square coat," it had black or brown lace over bright colored fabrics. Throughout the 50's and 60's he was noted for his use of fabrics and intricate embroidery. Jackie Kennedy loved to purchase Balenciaga's designs when she was the firat lady, but the President was afraid that the Amercian public would look at this as too lavish. Her haute couture expenses were eventually quietly paid by her father-in-law, Joseph Kennedy. Balenciaga left the company in 1968.

Today Balenciaga is owned by the Gucci Group, and the head designer is Nicolas Ghesquire. The group has recently put pressure of Nicolas and said that in 2007 the company needs to be profitable or they will replace him. The house is now a celebrity favorite to wear his designs such as Jennifer Connelly and Nicole Kidman. The brand today is also famous for its motorcycle-inspired handbags.
